This weekend will bring the start of the next Adopt a Highway cleanup week in Michigan. Dan Weingarten, with the Michigan Department of Transportation, says more than 3,000 groups of all stripes from around the state will take to roads to pick up trash. He says their efforts make a big difference each year.
“We’re talking about 70,000 bags of trash, $5 million estimated value annually for state taxpayers,” Weingarten told WSJM. “So, in addition to that civic pride, these groups are really doing a service to the state of Michigan that’s really worth some money and time.”
Weingarten says the volunteers will be out and about starting Saturday. They’ll be wearing brightly-colored vests, and drivers are asked to be extra cautious when passing them. Weingarten says any group of at least three people can find out more about signing up to adopt a roadway at Michigan.gov/AdoptAHighway.
