You’re hardly alone if you’re out of work and struggling to find a new job.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says about 40% of people out of work in October had been looking for work for almost four months. That’s up from last year.

Employment and human resources expert Daniel Space explains what’s going on.

We’ve never seen a market that’s just so brutal where people are like, ‘How am I unemployed for 11 months?’ And when I sit and talk to them about it, in many cases, it’s honest frustration. It’s companies taking a really long time. They’re dragging their feet. We just have a new president who’s made some really bold announcements about his plans that will have business impact. So companies are like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. We don’t even know what this is going to look like. Should we hire this person now?’”

Space say refining your keyword search online can help. He says, for example, instead of searching for “project manager” like others in your field, search for titles like “program manager” or “technical manager.” They’re different titles for the same basic role.
