A statewide campaign to crack down on distracted driving took place Wednesday.

Michigan State Police, sheriff’s departments, and local police all teamed up to catch distracted drivers from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. MSP Lieutenant Rene Gonzalez says they focused on the whole I-94 corridor from New Buffalo to Port Huron.

But we’re looking for any type of distracted driving,” Gonzalez said. “That could be if you’re eating and you’re not maintaining control of your vehicle. If you’re on your phone, which is illegal to do. If you’re doing other things in the vehicle that cause you to be paying attention to other things other than the main thing, and that is driving that vehicle.”

Gonzalez says distracted driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving.

The crackdown preceded Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April.
