Tigers 9, Brewers 1 – Skubal shines as Tigers win 9-1 to hand Brewers their 3rd straight loss
Tarik Skubal struck out nine while allowing four hits and no walks in seven shutout innings as the Detroit Tigers trounced the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner didn’t allow a baserunner until Rhys Hoskins singled to start the fifth. The Tigers already led 9-0 by that point. Kerry Carpenter homered and went 2 for 4. Gleyber Torres drove in three runs and scored twice. Andy Ibáñez was 2 for 5 with one run and two RBIs. Javier Báez scored twice. The Tigers handed Milwaukee its third straight loss by jumping all over Tyler Alexander, who pitched for Detroit from 2019-23. Alexander (1-1) gave up eight runs — four earned — and six walks in four innings while striking out two and walking three.
Padres 10, Cubs 4 – Tatis homers twice as Padres beat Cubs 10-4 to improve to 11-0 at home
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as the San Diego Padres improved to 11-0 at home by beating the Chicago Cubs 10-4 in the opener of a three-game series between National League division leaders. The Padres have the best record in the majors at 14-3. Tatis hit a solo homer with two outs in the third inning, scored the tiebreaking run on a wild pitch in a three-run seventh and then hit a two-run homer in the eighth. He has six home runs overall and five in his last six games. It was his 12th career multi-homer game.

Red Wings 6, Stars 4 – Red Wings beat Stars 6-4, giving Peter DeBoer a 6-game losing streak for 1st time in Dallas
Moritz Seider had a tiebreaking, power-play goal early in the third, Lucas Raymond scored midway through the period and Vladimir Tarasenko added an empty-net goal to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-4 win over the Dallas Stars on Monday night. Wyatt Johnston scored to pull the Stars within a goal with 7:04 left and shortly after they pulled goaltender Jake Oettinger to add an extra skater, Tarasenko scored to seal the win with 1:56 remaining. Detroit’s Jonatan Berggren tied the game a few minutes before Seider’s go-ahead goal and Cam Talbot stopped 25 shots in the team’s final home game of the regular season. Albert Johansson scored early in the game and Alex DeBrincat had a goal later in the first to put the Red Wings ahead.
Blackhawks 4, Canadiens 3 – SO – Nazar scores in shootout to give Blackhawks 4-3 win over Canadies
Frank Nazar scored the only goal of the shootout, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Montreal 4-3, spoiling Canadiens rookie Ivan Demidov’s NHL debut. Nazar had a goal and an assist, and Tyler Bertuzzi and Lukas Reichel also scored in regulation as Chicago rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead. Arvid Soderblom stopped 18 shots. Demidov had a goal and an assist, and Juraj Slafkovsky and Alex Newhook also scored for the Canadiens, who lost their third straight with a chance to clinch a playoff spot. Sam Montembeault finished with 22 saves. Officials initially ruled Nazar’s attempt a no-goal before overturning the call after Montreal’s next shooter made his attempt.
NHL – Ivan Demidov scores in NHL debut with Montreal Canadiens
Ivan Demidov made quite the first impression in his anticipated NHL debut. The 19-year-old Russian forward had a goal and an assist in the first period of Montreal’s 4-3 shootout loss against Chicago. Demidov was the No. 5 pick in last year’s NHL draft. He led his Russian club, SKA Saint Petersburg, in scoring with 49 points in 65 games this season, setting a Kontinental Hockey League record for under-20 players despite having inconsistent ice time. Canadiens fans watched from afar while Demidov continued his impressive play in Russia. They’ve been buzzing with even more excitement since his arrival.

NBA – Suns fire coach Mike Budenholzer after one dismal season with high-priced roster
The Phoenix Suns have parted ways with veteran coach Mike Budenholzer following one dismal season that featured a fast start before a maddening slide for a high-priced roster that included Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. The Suns made the unsurprising announcement on Monday, one day after the franchise finished with a 36-46 record which put them 11th in the Western Conference. They lost nine of their last 10 games, failing to qualify for the play-in tournament. The team says “competing at the highest level remains our goal, and we failed to meet expectations this season.”
WNBA – Paige Bueckers is No. 1 pick in WNBA draft, going to the Dallas Wings
Paige Bueckers is headed to Dallas as the first pick in the WNBA draft. The versatile UConn star is the latest Huskies standout to go No. 1, joining former greats Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart. Bueckers will have plenty of company, especially with the WNBA having its first expansion team in 17 years and the Golden State Valkyries making their debut draft selection at No. 5 overall. The first round will feature 12 picks, with 13 in each of the final two rounds. Dominique Malonga of France was picked No. 2 by the Seattle Storm and Notre Dame’s Sonia Citron was selected third by the Washington Mystics.
WNBA – Hailey Van Lith reunites with Angel Reese in WNBA after teaming up in college
Hailey Van Lith shared some hugs with family and then a kiss with NBA player Jalen Suggs, who was thrilled that the Chicago Sky selected his girlfriend with the No. 11 pick in the WNBA draft. So was Angel Reese. Van Lith and Reese, college teammates at LSU, will be reunited as pros. Van Lith was the first player to be part of three teams that reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. One was LSU, which was attempting to defend its 2023 national title when Iowa stopped the Tigers in the regional final in Reese’s final college game. Reese wrote on X that she and Van Lith didn’t get it right the first time and should run it back.
WNBA – WNBA assembles task force to help combat online hate toward players and teams
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced shortly before the draft on Monday that the league has assembled a dedicated task force to help combat online hate and vitriol directed toward players and teams. Engelbert said that the task force will have a four-pronged approach including monitoring social media and other digital platforms by using advance technology to detect threats and comments. The league will also strengthen conduct standards across WNBA platforms. There will be added security measures at league and team levels as well as dedicated mental health clinicians.
NFL – Cam Ward leads group of players who went from hidden gems to top prospects
Quarterback Cam Ward might be the first name off this year’s NFL draft board. Five years ago, he was pretty much off everybody’s radar outside of West Columbia, Texas. Ward took the only scholarship offer he had coming out of high school and turned it into a record-breaking college career that has made him the frontrunner to be the No. 1 overall pick April 24. He’s hardly the only hidden gem-turned-top-prospect in the draft. The others include Cam Skattebo of Arizona State and Harold Fannin Jr. of Bowling Green and players such as David Walker of Central Arkansas and Carson Schwesinger of UCLA.
